NEW MUSIC: Belleruche – ‘270 Stories’

22/09/2010

Belleruche are set to release their 3rd full length album on October 11th via the renowned Tru Thoughts label. The trio, comprised of vocalist Kathrin deBoer, guitarist Ricky Fabulous and turntablist DJ Modest, continue with their signature ‘turntable soul’ sound, encompassing trip-hop, blues and soul.

I have been a fan of the band since their 2007 debut Turntable Soul Music, and their 2008 follow-up, The Express, cemented their position as one of my favourite UK acts. 270 Stories follows in a similar vein to it’s predecessors, however the trio have managed to iron out a few of the wrinkles present on previous releases. If there was one criticism I had of their two previous albums it’s that they tended to sound a little samey. Kathrin’s vocals were all top notch, however the tracks themselves all seemed to incorporate the same skittish, off-kilter beats, and the tempo didn’t seem to vary much. The same cannot be said for 270 Stories though, yes the tracks are still very much recognisable as Belleruche, but the sound seems to have been padded out a little with some very funky bass and a slightly tougher sound.

As an album, the collection plays as a very cohesive, very enjoyable whole. Picking standout tracks is difficult, each grabs you by the scruff of the neck from the get go and refuses to let go until, before you know it, the next track has kicked in. If I had to pick a couple of tracks for a special mention it would be lead single ‘Clockwatching‘, the hauntingly beautiful ‘Bobby’ and the drum heavy ‘3 Amp Fuse’.  Ask me what any of the songs on the album (or any Belleruche album for that matter) are actually about and I would be hard-pressed to give you a clear, definitive answer, but what I do know is that Belleruche have their own unique lane when it comes to making music, and it’s just good to be along for the ride.
