Get To Know … Iva Lamkum

Although soul music has traditionally been seen as the domain of US artists, the past few years have shown that the rest of the world also has a lot to offer. Some of the most exciting artists, in my opinion, are coming out of New Zealand and Australia at the moment, artists such as Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Bamboos, Hollie Smith, Sola Rosa, Ladi6, Julien Dyne and the lady I’m featuring here, Iva Lamkum.

Iva first came to my attention on Sola Rosa’s fantastic Get It Together from 2009. Hearing lead single ‘Turn Around’ for the first time I was instantly hooked … who was the lady with the husky, soulful, funk-tinged voice? A quick google search brought me the name ‘Iva Lamkum’ and a bit more digging lead me to her 2008 self-titled debut EP.

The sound on Iva’s EP is a little different from the uptempo funk found on her Sola Rosa collab, however the soulfulness is there by the bucket load, especially on stand-out tracks ‘Kung Fu Grip’ and the beautiful ‘White Roses’.

Iva is much in demand in her native NZ, shows in support of her EP sold out quickly and support from radio and music tastemakers was strong. She is currently working on her debut album due this year, and has already released the lead single ‘No’.
