Stax Issue Their Complete #1’s

07/04/2010

Stax are probably the second biggest and best known record label to come out of the 60s and early 70s. Alongside Motown, and a host of smaller labels, they provided the soundtrack for a generation who apprciated good solid soul music, and  a host of classics on which future generations would grow up.

The newly reformed label celebrated their 50th anniversary recently and have released all the #1 hits from their iconic era. To be honest when I got my copy I was surprised that there were only enough tracks to fill a single disc, I had assumed that Stax had had far more #1’s than this, however what you do get is a kind of ‘best of’ compilation. I probably had slightly less than half the tracks on here prior to getting my copy, so it’s great to hear some stuff that I either hadn’t heard for years, or was completely new to me.

As well as well known classics such as Sam & Dave’s ‘Soul Man’, Jean Knight’s ‘Mr Big Stuff’, The Staple Singers‘ ‘I’ll Take You There’ and Otis Reddings iconic ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay’ there are a few tracks that will be new to those not familiar with the Stax catalogue, such as The Dramatics’ ‘In The Rain’ and the trio of tracks from Johnnie Taylor, which makes this a valuable addition (if not a thorough overview) of the golden days.

The rejuvinated label are now signing up modern day soul icons such as Angie Stone and N’dambi, so who knows, in another 50 or so years we may have even more classics on our hands!
