Preview: Dr Rubberfunk – Hot Stone

The Doctor delivers an audible prescription for your mind, body and soul with a plethora of funky, jazzy, bluesy, soulful and very seductive grooves!

Getting 2010 off to a soulful start is Dr Rubberfunk with his highly anticipated 3rd album. The Doctor is now signed to Jalepeno Records (home of Smoove & Turrell) and will release Hot Stone on 18th January. The album features collaborations with Brit-soul royalty Andrew Roachford, John Turrell and Dutch soulstress Sitzka.

I’ve had the album on my iPod for a couple of months now and I have been regularly dipping in and out to savour some of it’s many delights. The 4 four tracks featuring Sitzka are all very well executed and bring to mind slightly softer, more subtle versions of pairings such as The Bamboos/Kylie Auldist or Quantic/Alice Russell, especially album opener ‘Part Of Me’. Two of the real album highlights are ‘Trouble Woman’ featuring Roachford and ‘Northern Comfort’ featuring John Turrell. Both are excellent examples of modern northern soul/funk and ‘Northern Comfort’ definitely showcases why Turrell is regarded as the golden boy of the UK scene at the moment. The vocal tracks on the album are balanced out nicely by three instrumental tracks found on the latter half of the album. All are a success, however the deep-funk of ‘Theme From Hot Stone’ stands out and shows us why Dr Rubberfunk is regarded so highly by his peers.
