Tru Thoughts is a UK based independant record label specialising in soul, jazz, nu-jazz, downtempo and other associated genres, or as label boss Robert Luis puts it anything with:

Originality, soul, creativity, [that is] trying to push music forward and [has] good hooks!

I’ve been aware of them for a while, but only insofar that a few artists I liked had released records through them such as Alice Russell and Quantic, however over the last 18 months or so things have changed. I now actively seek out music released on the label as you can pretty much guarantee that anything carrying the Tru Thoughts logo will be a quality listen. So far I have gotten my hands on gems from Kinny, Flevans, Kylie Auldist, TM Juke, Belleruche, Nostalgia 77, The Bamboos and Lizzy Parks, not to mention their fantastic Shapes and Covers compilations

This year Tru Thoughts celebrated 10 years in the business, no mean feat for an independant started under Robert’s stairs with label co-owner Paul Jonas. They recieved the honour of being named ‘Label Of The Year’ at the 2005 Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards and have continued going from strength to strength ever since.

To celebrate their 10th birthday, the label are releasing a limited edition 3CD compilation covering some of their best known material along with some unreleased tracks. They also threw a free, all-day party at London’s Vibe Bar. Sadly I couldn’t make it down, but with performances from Alice Russell, Kinny, Kylie Auldist, Lizzy Parks and more I’m sure it would have been one hell of a show. Luckily for me (and all those who couldn’t attend) a few of the amazing performances are now up on YouTube, check them out below and take a look around their website here. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed!
