The artwork says it all …. disco is BACK!

I’d been hearing good things on the musical grapevine about UK artist Shena so I was extremely pleased when I was sent a promotional copy of her debut album One Man Woman. My anticipation and excitement grew further when I learnt that she had worked with some of THE biggest names in music including James Brown, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Joss Stone & Amy Winehouse.

The album kicks off with the track ‘My Fantasy’, which instantly brought to mind the disco classic ‘Boogie Wonderland’. It sounds like some long lost track circa 1975 and this is the theme that continues throughout the whole album. Shena, and producer/partner/co-writer James Winchester were certainly onto something when they developed the concept/sound of the album. Disco is seeing somewhat of a resurgence in many UK clubs and Shena manages to perfectly balance that authentic 70s sound with a modern take on classic disco to ensure she will appeal to the widest possible audience.

The second track on the album is the equally catchy ‘Can’t Stop The Rain’. As soon as you here the beat and the vocals kick in it is almost impossible to sit/stand still. This was chosen as the lead single from the album, and after one listen it’s easy to understand why!

Most of the album continues in a very similar vein to the two tracks already mentioned. The latest single, ‘Nasty Little Rumour’ is another great slice of disco-pop and ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ continues the disco theme, albeit taking inspiration from the early 80s rather than the 70s.

The only real variation from the upbeat 70s theme is on the track ‘Brave Face’. Appearing smack bang in the middle of the album the sudden drop in tempo comes as a bit of a shock, however after listening to the song it is a very welcome change of pace and one of my personal favourites on the album.

One Woman Man was released on No Prisoner Records on 31st August 2009.
