What’s New: Catch Up

22/07/2009

too busy

I have been neglecting the blog over the last few weeks. Between work, personal commitments and trying to listen to new music, i’ve had very little time to sit down and write!

I’ve made a promise to myself that i’m going to make an effort to post here at least twice a week … we’ll see how it goes!

  • While i’ve been semi-absent we have had 2 great releases. First up is VV Brown’s Travelling Like The Light, a great mix of doo-wop, soul and pop, it’s a must have for the summer (if we get one that is). 11 of the tracks are about a difficult break up she went through while living in America, however they are far from your average ‘break-up’ songs. On first listen some may think it’s a little too ‘pop’ or ‘lightweight’ however listen to the lyrics and i’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised! The second release is Joy Jones’ Godchild. All i’m gonna say for now is if you havn’t heard of her check her out ASAP (i’m hoping to get a full review up early next week).
  • 2 weekends ago I took a break for a few days and headed down to London. I say a ‘break’, in fact I didn’t stop for the 3 days I spent there! First up was the West End musical version of ‘Sister Act’ which was amazing. I heard that they were unable to use the songs featured in the film version so I was a little apprehensive, however the new tracks written especially for the musical are outstanding and the performances from the cast, especially Patina Miller (as Sister Mary Clarence), were great. I also managed to squeeze in 2 live shows at the Jazz Cafe, the first was UK soul veteran Omar and the second was from US soulstress Leela James. Both were fantastic, however Leela’s show was the definite highlight of the weekend!
  • I’m trying to clear a backlog of recent releases in order to make way for some (potentially) great releases over the next 4-6 weeks. If official dates are to be trusted we should be seeing new music from Ledisi, Eric Roberson, Yahzarah (seems like i’ve been waiting forever), Little Dragon and Laura Vane & The Vipertones … i’ll try and keep you posted as and when they drop.
  • Finally, as some of you are aware I also contribute to http://www.soulculture.co.uk/blog. If you check the page listings at the top you will find links to all my articles over there!
