Discussion: The Missing List

With a wealth of new artists appearing on my radar every day, and news that old favourites are due to release long-awaited follow-ups, I thought it appropriate to revisit some of the artists who have gone on the missing list!

  • First up is Jaguar Wright. The Philly songstress has 2 fantastic albums under her belt but has disappeared off of our radar screens since the release of ‘Divorcing Neo To Marry Soul’. Her gritty, up-front brand of soul is something that i’m definitely missing. A new album would definitely brighten up my ’09.
  • Janelle Monae is a name that had everyone talkin in 2008, for both the right reasons (Metropolis Suite I) and the wrong reasons (her signing with Diddy). Whether or not the Bad Boy deal was the ‘kiss of death’ for Ms. Monae remains to be seen, although news that she has nearly completed Suite II & III gives us some hope.
  • Ok so technically Marsha Ambrosius hasn’t been missing as such. We have had her ‘Yours Truly’ mixtape for a while now and regular ‘leaks’, but I want an ALBUM. Her signing to Aftermath had some people groaning (after what happened to Dawn Robinson) but her presence is should be a good sign.
  • N’Dambi is an artists who i discovered through my favourite blogger Vivrant Thang. 2008 saw news that she had signed with the re-invented Stax label and was set to release an album this year. Ok i know it’s only March but since that news i havn’t heard a thing about her or the project.
  • Carol Riddick’s ‘Moments Like This’ is still an album I listen to AT LEAST once a month. After first hearing her on Musiq’s ‘Soulstar’ i was instantly hooked. I can’t remember hearing any info regarding a follow up or other projects she is working on and her myspace has been silent for a long while.
  • Finally we have  Aaries who i also discovered while listening to Muisq’s albums. The talented siblings have had numerous tracks up on their myspace page and every now and then i stumble across an interview/article that states they are near completing their debut …. but no release date or even an estimate. The myspace tracks sound promising and the duo have said they have complete creative control so there should be minimal deviation from what we have heard so far.

Who is on your missing list? have you heard anything about the artists above? Please feel free to comment.

You know my wish list runs deep so I won’t blog in your comments. I think all of these artists except Aaries are on it.

Been following N’Dambi’s updates on Facebook and we will definitely get something from her this year. She seems to be in the studio pretty consistently. So let’s hold out hope for a summer release.

Oh how I miss Jaguar and Carol. If anyone wants to know why I get so pissed at the Beyawnces of the world releasing crappy albums every year, these are two prime examples.

    Sigh.

Team N’Dambi all day!!! She has one out called “Weird Kinda Wonderful”. Where is my Meshell N’Dgeocello? The ever- fabulous Joi? Rhian Benson? Goapele?

Carol is actually taking a break and doing the 9-5 thang trying to regroup & see if this industry is worth it anymore.

@ Viv – I’m with you on the ‘Beyawnces’ comment lol.

@ Imsofamous – I have Weird Kinda Wonderful and i’m in love with it!! Im reliably informed (see Vivrant Thangs comment) that a new album is in the pipeline. Can’t Wait!

@ aluvprofusion – that’s a real shame about Carol, i hope she finds it in herself to come out with another album. We definitely need more talent like her.

    Yeah, Soul.

Vivrant is a very reliable source. Wonder if she even knows she’s my best friend! LOL! She and I share an immense craving for N’dambi.
