Best Of British: Tawiah, Eric Lau & Laura Izibor

The intention of this blog is not to focus solely on soul music coming out of the UK, although hopefully it will make up a significant part of it.

Here are a couple of UK artists who I have been feeling over the last 12 months or so. Many will be familiar with the 3 I have chosen to highlight but for those of you who are not please check them out (myspace links provided).

Most of you will should have heard of London girl Tawiah. She released an EP ‘In Jodi’s Bedroom’ in the early part of ’08 and is, according to myspace, working on her full-lenth debut due this year. The album is due to feature production from long-time collaborator Jodi Milliner and ‘man-of-the-moment’ Mark Ronson. Tawiah’s musical style is somewhat eclectic, combining elements of classic soul from the 60’s & 70’s, 80’s electro-tinged soul, right up to ‘modern’ soul and production values [myspace].

Laura Izibor

Again this girl is probably known to most as she seems to be gathering quite a following on both sides of the pond in the run-up to her debut release in May. She has already had songs featured on Grey’s Anatomy and the the feature films ‘The Nanny Diaries’ and Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married’. I was pleasantly surprised when I first heard her material about 12 months ago. She is definately the ‘one-to-watch’ and i anticipate her debut to be massive. Her material is up-to-date lyrically and musically but you can tell she has a thorough appreciation of the classics [official].

Eric Lau

Eric Lau is a UK based producer who has previously worked with Dudley Perkins and Georgia Ann Muldrow. His debut album ‘New Territories’ was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. Aswell as showing off his production skills, he used the album to showcase some of the best underground talent the UK has to offer such as Tawiah, Rahel, Sarina Leah, Annabel, Tosin and Meshach Brown [myspace].

There are many more artists who are worthy of closer inspection and i hope to feature them here soon. If you are looking for a little bit more UK soul check out the SITKOL feature on Leon King.
